Carshalton Athletic 1 - Dorking Wanderers 3
Posted: 19th September 2017
Dorking Wanderers moved comfortably into the second round of the Velocity Trophy, despite falling behind to a penalty early in the second half.
Making six changes to the starting line-up for this newly named league cup clash with opponents from a division below, Wanderers quickly hit their stride with quick passing and movement. Chances came for Dan Pearse and Gareth Chendlik, who worked impressively upfront all night. Sol Pinnock whipped in a left foot cross which Tom Tolfrey met in the six yard box but, unable to get on top of the ball, his header ended up on top of the net
Despite Dorking’s dominance, the first half remained goalless and Carshalton got a glimpse of a possible upset in the 54th minute when Isaac Philpot brought down Raheem Sterling-Parker in the penalty area and, from the spot, the striker tucked the ball into the left hand corner of the net to give Athletic an unlikely 1-0 lead.
Only a last ditch tackle by Tom Summerfield stopped the home side doubling the lead two minutes’ later as Josh Phillips broke into the box, but two substitutions turned the game back in Dorking’s favour.
First, Sam Beard on his return from injury, drove a low ball in from wide left and Tom Tolfrey glanced it into the far corner of the net for a 68th minute equaliser.
Two minutes’ later, Wanderers were ahead. Eugene Harran-Morgan, having only just taken to the field, curled in a pinpoint cross from the right which Dan Pearse headed in from six yards.
There was still time for a cameo by Matt Briggs who made sure of the victory with the goal of the game. Picking up the ball on the left hand side of the penalty area, he drifted through three defenders into the box before slotting the ball into the corner of the Carshalton net, making it three wins on the spin for Wanderers.
Dorking return to league action on Saturday, hosting fellow Bostik Premier Division newcomers Brightlingsea Regent at Westhumble, with kick off at 3pm.
