Dorking football legend to bring through the next generation at wanderers

Posted:  1st June 2018

Local football legend Steve Lunn has been appointed to a new position of Pathway Development Advisor at Dorking Wanderers, taking a key role in the club’s ambitions to provide a route for the town’s best young talent to progress to the first team.

The appointment comes following this week’s announcement of an Under 23 team competing in the Combined Counties League, under new Head Coach Peter Augustine, completing a step-by-step pathway for local players to move from youth and Under 18 football into competitive men’s football and, for those with the right dedication and ability, on to the Dorking Bostik Premier League squad.

As Pathway Development Advisor, Steve Lunn will take a lead role in the recruitment and development of young players, liaising with the management of all teams within the club to identify players capable of progression to elite levels and guiding them as they look to maximise their potential.

As a former player, Steve is well placed to know what it takes to play non-league football at a high level. He is one of the best-known local players and holds the record for first team appearances in Dorking’s modern history. He also played and scored for the town in its biggest-ever match – the 1992 FA Cup first round tie against Peter Shilton’s Plymouth Argyle at the original Meadowbank stadium. As a coach, Steve has been a first team manager, involved in youth football for many years and, last season, manager of the Dorking Wanderers Development Squad.

Operations Director Ben Eltham says, “I’m really pleased to have someone as knowledgeable, experienced and respected as Steve in this role. He did a fantastic job for us last year setting up and running the development squad and he’s going to be even more influential in helping young players progress as our Pathway Development Advisor.

“We’re absolutely determined to give the best possible opportunity for young players with the right attitude and ability to represent Dorking in the first team.”

Steve Lunn says, “As the first team reaches higher and higher levels, it’s obviously harder and harder for young players to break through – and working out who will make it is far from an exact science.

“But what we can do as a club is ensure that we nurture young lads to be the best players they can be and I’ll be delighted to bring my experience to bear to help them learn the right way to do things, on and off the pitch, and deal with the successes and setbacks.

“It may take a little while, but I’ll know it’s been a success when we get the first player coming through the youth ranks and into the first team.”

Meanwhile, Dorking Wanderers have announced a trial date for any aspiring young players who would like to play for the club in the Combined Counties League as part of the new Under 23 squad. The trial takes place at the new Meadowbank stadium on Tuesday 5th June at 7:30pm. Places can be booked by emailing
