Free Meadowbank Open Day - Everyone’s Invited!
Posted: 12th June 2018
Dorking Wanderers will throw open the doors of the town’s new Meadowbank Stadium, two days’ before the Grand Celebrity Opening of the state-of-the-art facility with a free Open Day for local residents, pupils, businesses, sponsors and supporters.
Stars from some of TVs most popular shows, including EastEnders, Love Island, I’m a Celebrity and The X Factor will be taking part in a celebrity match to celebrate the return of football to its historic town centre home on Sunday 8th July, but local people will get the chance to see behind the scenes for the first time throughout the day on Friday 6th July.
Chairman Marc White says, “This is a stadium for the whole town - residents, schools, workers, businesses - not just football. With the Dorking Wanderers clubhouse open seven days a week serving well-balanced meals and takeaways from The Healthy Kitchen, the pitch in use by the community all week, the soft play area and Surrey FA too, Meadowbank is truly a new destination for Dorking.
“So we want the whole local community, as well as our own supporters, to have an exclusive chance to see everything it has to offer ahead of the grand opening.”
The free Open Day will begin on 6th July at 9am when Mole Valley councillors and staff, and local media, are invited to join with some special guests for the official opening. At mid-day, sponsors, local business owners, community groups and charities in the area are welcome to join representatives from Dorking Wanderers in the club lounge to view the stadium while enjoying a selection of food and drink.
From 4 to 6pm, it's the turn of staff and pupils from local schools along with youth groups to see everything Meadowbank and the club will offer young people, and at 7pm Dorking residents, workers, club supporters and other members of the general public are invited to look around the stadium and enjoy complimentary refreshments in the clubhouse. The open evening runs until 9pm and is a drop-in session, with no need to book in advance.
After a year of frustrating delays due to overrunning building work, Marc White says there’s no doubt that the stadium is now ready.
He says, “It’s certainly been a long time coming, with one or two false dawns, but that will all be forgotten when people see the stadium.
“I can absolutely guarantee that it’s all systems go this time. After the disappointments earlier in the year, we said we would wait until the club was actually installed in the new stadium and it was being used before announcing a new opening and we have been true to our word.
“Dorking Wanderers has moved into the clubhouse and the pitch is already getting good use. So put these opening dates in your diary in ink - they’re happening!”
While the Open Day is completely free, admission to the Grand Celebrity Opening two days’ later is by reasonably priced ticket, booked in advance. The event is aimed at families with the celebrity game followed by a Dorking Legends match, reflecting the town’s football history. Tickets, including a specially priced family pass, are selling well and available now along with full details from www.dorkingwanderers.com.
