Dorking Wanderers 4 Godalming Town 1

Posted: 14th November 2017

A patient performance eventually broke down a stubborn Godalming Town defence, easing Dorking Wanderers comfortably into the second round of the Surrey Senior Cup.

With the visitors from the Combined Counties League sitting behind the ball and happy to soak up pressure, Dorking played largely in the Godalming half but found balls into the box defended resolutely and in number.

It took half an hour for the first attempt on target. Dan Pearse spread the ball out wide right to Sol Pinoock, who cut inside but saw his left footed strike from 20 yards gathered comfortably by the Godalming keeper Dimitrios Kyriatzis.

The breakthrough came ten minutes later. A delightful defence-splitting pass by Luke Moore sent Gareth Chendlik through on goal and he finished coolly with a low, near post strike.

If Wanderers thought the second half would be a formality, there was a shock on 52 minutes when the visitors from two divisions below equalised with their first meaningful attack of the game. A defensive error allowed a long ball to bounce and Hakim Griffiths nipped in, sending a shot high into the middle of the Dorking net.

The Godalming resistance proved short-lived, although there was an element of good fortune in the way Wanderers regained the lead ten minutes’ later. Lewis Putman’s first time cross low from the left, somehow found its way through a crowded box to an unmarked Chendlik, whose shot from ten yards bounced off the keeper and into the net.

Back in front, there would be no letting up from Dorking a second time. A first time strike by Moore on the edge of the box went just wide of the far post, and Chendlik was only denied a hat trick as a result of a superb save from Godalming keeper Kyriatzis, who got down at full stretch and stopped a powerful downward header right on the line.

The result was sealed in a ten-minute cameo by Giuseppe Sole. On 84 minutes, the late substitute brought the ball down on the right hand side of the box, advanced two steps and dispatched a pinpoint low strike across the keeper and into the bottom far corner of the net.

There was better to come on 90 minutes as Sole spotted Kyriatzis off his line and clipped a 35 yard shot that arced over the keeper, before nestling in the net and wrapping up a totally dominant performance with a deserved 4-1 win.
