It’s 105 points apiece as Wanderers secure last day victory

Dorking Wanderers and Tooting shared a remarkable 210 points as the season reached its finale at Westhumble on Saturday as the two title chasers clashed. After a gripping run up to the end of the season, in form Wanderers were left with the uphill task of beating table toppers Tooting by 5 clear goals, giving Manager Marc White the unenviable task of deciding upon team selection with a more than likely play-off semi-final against Hastings due on Tuesday night.
It looked like White managed to get the balance right as Wanderers gave their many supporters hope as they started the game on the front foot, with Tooting having keeper Kyle Merson to thank after making two very fine saves from James McShane and Giuseppe Sole in the opening 15 minutes. Resolute defending was the order of the day, as Wanderers predictably were largely on the front foot searching for the breakthrough goal. However, the breakthrough goal only came in the 71st minute after good work from Sam Beard set up Giuseppe Sole to give Wanderers the lead.
Wanderers went close on a few more occasions, and Tooting hit the bar through the lively Mike Dixon, as Wanderers increasingly left themselves open at the back whilst searching for more goals.
Manager Marc White was pleased with the overall outcome of the game, and said “Finishing on 105 points and joint leaders of the table was our secondary objective today, and we achieved that comfortably. I think we picked a team that enabled us to rest key players (Beckles, Dyett, Tolfrey, Gunner) whilst also giving ourselves an outside chance of doing something special”
White went on to add: “The team are fully focused now on achieving promotion through the play-offs”.
Wanderers Play-Off Semi Final takes place this Tuesday night when Hastings United visit Westhumble (7.45pm kick-off).
