3 points gained for Wanderers

Wanderers gained a vital 3 points over title rivals Tooting & Mitcham with a hard fought ground out victory in difficult conditions over Walton Casuals. Unsurprisingly the blustery conditions proved tough for both sides, but a well worked goal between James McShane, Tom Tolfrey and finished off by Giuseppe Sole proved to be decisive.
Wanderers, missing the influential trio of Matt Briggs, Ben Dyett and Anthony Oaks, also saw Dan Mahoney unavailable due to commitments at Woking FC, whilst Tom Summerfield was able to take his place on the bench for the second game running and now looks in good recovery from his hamstring issue.
The general pattern of the game was a well organised Walton Casuals side sitting defensively deep, willing to play on the break and happy for Wanderers to have lots of possession, of which during the first half chances were few and far between.
Following Sole’s goal in the 47th minute, and with Walton needing to be more offensive, the game opened up slightly, and Wanderers created more premium chances, two of which fell to substitute Gareth Chendlik, who with just the keeper to beat was denied by the very impressive Denzel Gerrar in the Walton goal. James McShane also went close, hitting the bar with 20 minutes to play.
Manager Marc White said: “I was impressed with Anthony’s (Gale) set up of his side. I know they’ve had some personnel problems recently, and I thought in light of this they seemed organised. I thought we were good value for our win. We won’t get carried away with results elsewhere. There’s still an awful lot of points up for grabs. My bigger concern at the moment would be the growing injury list, so we will be working hard to bring these players back to fitness at this key time. Fortunately, due to the good work of first team coaches Tom Duke and Dean Milton we are able to use our full squad and still retain the style of play that we’re renowned for, which is a credit to them”.
Wanderers are next in league action on Tuesday night when South Park visit Westhumble in the Ryman Division One South (7.45pm kick-off).
