The Academy Programme


The Dorking Wanderers Football Academy is an exciting opportunity for students aged 16-19 to gain sports based qualifications alongside professional football coaching.

The students work in a specialist environment at the state of the art Meadowbank Stadium, Dorking, allowing them to benefit from a unique mix of a specifically tailored curriculum and the opportunity to understand the life of a footballer. The programme aims to help all of its students develop as both players on the pitch and confident young adults away from the changing room.


The Dorking Wanderers Football Academy is run by a team of professional teachers and UEFA qualified coaches. We have over 10 years experience in the Football Academy Industry.


The Academy has been set up in conjunction with the management team at Dorking Wanderers FC meaning that progression to the first team is a real opportunity.

How the Academy works


Each student enrolled on the course will complete a BTEC Sport Level 2/3 qualification alongside professional coaching sessions. Some of the exciting features of the course include:


  • BTEC Level 3 qualification equivalent to 3 A-Levels (Level 2 equivalent to 4 GCSE's)
  • A tailored curriculum led by qualified teachers
  • The opportunity to play for Dorking Wanderers FC in the FA Youth Cup
  • 19 units relating to sport, from Anatomy and Physiology to Sport as a Business
  • Training sessions by UEFA qualified coaches
  • Valuable work experience in community or academy projects
  • Opportunities to progress in football and different pathways
  • A comprehensive football education including fixtures in the Football Conference Youth Alliance League

Where can the course take me?


The course is designed to offer multiple exit routes for successful students, including:

• Non League Football • Apprenticeships • Personal Fitness Instruction etc

Qualifications gained from the course


As part of the programme all players will complete a BTEC Level 2/3 in Sport, with a focus on development, coaching and fitness. Some of the units which will be completed include:


The aim of this unit is to provide a broad understanding of the importance of nutrition and hydration to a variety of sports participants.


The aim of this unit is to examine the characteristics of effective sport or exercise leadership and to give learners the opportunity to demonstrate own planning and delivery of a sport or exercise session.


This unit will enable learners to explore aspects of business in sport and enable them to conduct and use market research.


The aim of this unit is to explore the structure and function of the skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular and respiratory systems and also to learn the fundamentals of the energy systems.


The aim of this unit is to develop a learners understanding and knowledge of the roles, responsibilities, skills and techniques of a sports coach and how to apply them whilst coaching and/or leading sports sessions.


This unit provides an opportunity for learners to explore the body’s response to acute exercise and how

the body adapts to long-term exercise participation.


In this unit, learners will explore and develop the knowledge, skills and qualities needed to successfully plan, promote and lead sports events.


This unit enables the learner to explore the role and function of performance profiling in sport and the application of profiling to the design, monitoring and evaluation of a sports performance action plan.


The aim of this unit is to enable learners to explore the skills, techniques, tactics and rules of team sports through practical participation.

Alongside the BTEC qualification players will have the opportunity to complete FA recognised courses such as:


  • Level 2 in football coaching
  • FA emergency first aid in sport
  • Coaching disabled footballers
