Dorking Wanderers 4-1 Potters Bar Town
Posted: 7th November 2018
A Jason Prior first-half hat-trick set Dorking on their way to victory over in-form Potters Bar Town, with an all-round team performance that saw Wanderers deservedly hit the top of the Bostik Premier Division.
Potters Bar arrived at Meadowbank with four wins in the past five games, but Dorking also showed why they are unbeaten in the league since August as they took less than two minutes to open the scoring.
Early pressure led to two corners in quick succession and, from the second, Prior headed the ball into the net from underneath the crossbar.
Potters Bar almost hit back immediately as a Keegan Cole free kick on the right hand edge of the penalty area went low through the defensive wall. Wanderers’ keeper Slovomir Huk got down to parry the shot and Isaac Philpot was quick to clear the rebound from the six-yard box with the visitors’ strike force ready to pounce.
On 13 minutes Dorking doubled the lead as the lively Tom Richards crossed the ball in from the left and Prior, unmarked in the middle of the box, steered it past the Town keeper, Berkeley Laurencin.
But having already signalled his dead ball danger, Cole halved the deficit just two minutes’ later, this time with a free kick on the left hand side of the area. A superb strike curled around the wall and into the far corner of the Dorking net, just beyond the despairing dive of Huk.
In an open game, it was Wanderers who proved the most clinical as they restored the two goal lead on 21 minutes. A ball in from the left found Luke Moore on the edge of the box and he fired low into the bottom corner of the goal.
Even at 3-1, the game looked far from won as Potters Bar continued to pose a strong attacking threat. There was a let off for Dorking as the defence failed to clear the ball from in front of the goal, but the visitors were unable to get a shot away, while Dernell Wynter fired just high from distance. The home supporters held their breath as Cole stepped up to take yet another free kick on the edge of the box but, this time, he elected to shoot over the wall - and over the crossbar.
Potters Bar’s hopes of a comeback were extinguished on 35 minutes as Wanderers scored a timely fourth. From a free kick, the ball was slipped right to Luke Moore who whipped it across for Prior to complete his hat-trick, heading in at the far post.
After an exhilarating first 45 minutes, it was little surprise that the second half was lower key. Lewis Taylor hit a low drive just wide of the post, while Prior had two opportunities to add to his goal tally but, with a commanding lead, Dorking could concentrate on containing the impressively pacy Potters Bar attack, restricting the previously potent visitors to nothing more than half-chances and securing the win.
Victory on Wednesday night would see Tonbridge Angels displace Dorking at the top of the table, before the Bostik League’s two top teams meet in the FA Trophy this Saturday. The much-anticipated cup tie kicks off at Meadowbank at 3pm.
